Shrimp Fra Diavolo

minutesThe name sounds fancy but, this traditional Italian recipe made with tomatoes, white wine and red pepper is actually fairly simple and quick. Fra Diavolo means “Brother Devil” in Italian, which refers to the level of spice.
Ingredients
1 lb. of large shrimp, peeled and deveined (we used Trader Joe’s frozen Argentinian red shrimp)
1 tsp. of dried crushed red pepper flakes
2 tsp. of salt, divided
2 Tbsp. of avocado oil
1 shallot, diced
One 14 and 1/2 ounce can of petite diced tomatoes
1 Tbsp. of tomato paste
1/2 cup of dry white wine
4-6 cloves of minced garlic
3 Tbsp. of fresh basil leaves, chopped
1/2 lemon, juiced
Directions
- In a medium size bowl, add shrimp, 1 tsp. of salt and red pepper. Gently toss together.
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add shrimp and saute about 2 minutes on each side or until shrimp turns pink and opaque.
- Transfer the shrimp to a bowl. Cover with foil to keep warm. Set aside.
- Add shallots to the same skillet, saute until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Then add tomatoes, tomato paste , wine, garlic, and 1 tsp. of salt. Simmer until the sauce slightly thickens, about 10-15 mins.
- Return the shrimp and accumulated juices to the tomato mixture. Gently toss to coat and cook for additional minute, stir in fresh basil and fresh lemon juice.

- 3. When buying shrimp, we prefer to buy wild-caught shrimp. A large amount of shrimp is imported from other countries, which is farm raised and means there is a good chance they are treated with antibiotics. Wild caught seafood is caught in a natural habitat which results in mere nutritional quality.
