This recipe was originally shared with us years ago from a co-worker in Texas! (Which means no beans). We have tweaked it throughout the years and added a special ingredient…chocolate. A little bit of chocolate adds richness and a deeper flavor. Plus everything is better with chocolate!

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp. of olive oil

  • 1 1/2- 2 lbs. of ground beef

  • 1/2 yellow onion, diced

  • 3-4 cloves of garlic, minced

  • Two 14 ounce cans of diced tomatoes

  • Two 15 ounce cans of tomato sauce

  • One 7 ounce can of diced green chiles

  • 3 Tbsp. of chili powder

  • 1 Tbsp. of cumin

  • 1 Tbsp. of dried oregano

  • 1 tsp. of smoked paprika

  • 2 ounces of semisweet chocolate pieces

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Optional toppings: shredded cheese, avocado, sour cream

Directions

  • In a large dutch oven, add oil and onions and cook until onions are tender, about 4-5 minutes. Add beef and cook until cooked through, about 25 minutes.
  • Add remaining ingredients. Mix together and simmer on low heat for about 30-40 minutes.
  • Serve in a bowl and top with optional toppings.

Tips and nutritional value

  • 1. Studies show that dark chocolate (70-85% cocoa) is one of the best sources of antioxidants. It is actually very nutritious (when eaten in moderation) and can lower the risk of heart disease, improve brain function and reduce inflammation. (source: healthline & Joy Bauer)
